Board combines three events into the 'CCWA Big 3'
May 3 2008 -
This year, the CCWA Board of Directors decided to combine three annual events into
one "Big" day, reasoning that if club members and out-of-town windsurfers
needed to save only one day on the calendar for CCWA, participation would
increase. The three events included the 2nd annual Water Sports Swap Meet,
the Screamin' Reach Long Distance Fleet Rally and lastly the Party
& Shrimp Boil.

CCWA members featured in newspaper for volunteer efforts
April 2008 -
CCWA members Joe Lynch, Florence Tissot and
Carrie Robertson volunteered with the City of Corpus Christi's
Storm Water Stenciling program on March 29 to help increase
awareness that rain water sweeps trash from city streets into the
bay. The CCWA volunteers joined others from Surfrider Foundation to
mark storm water drainage inlets near the Oleander Point
neighborhood. Walking through the streets dressed in bright yellow
vests, the volunteers glued plastic placards reading, "No Dumping -
Drains to Bays," onto the top of the storm water drain inlets. The
placards educate residents that trash tossed from vehicles, grass
clippings, plastic bags and hazardous waste that lands in the
inlets ends up in the bay. Read the full article online at the:

CCWA member organizes Oleander cleanup
April 2008 -
CCWA member Philip Keyserlingk organized a cleanup at Oleander
Point, one of Corpus' most popular windsurfing launches, as part
of the Texas GLO's Adopt-A-Beach Coastwide Cleanup on Saturday,
April 26. Volunteers from State Rep. Juan Garcia's office joined
in and "together we were able to make a dent," said Keyserlingk,
a Vice President at Value Bank. About 10 people joined in
despite a cold front that brought cooler temps and north wind.
They filled 8-10 large trash bags. The GLO's next coastwide
cleanup is September 27, 2008.

CCWA completes Bird Island sandbag project on April 12
by Mike Murphy, CCWA's Bird Island Basin Launch Advocate
April 2008 - CCWA and other volunteers participated in
the Bird Island Basin sandbag project Saturday,
April 12. Joe Escoto, PINS Park Superintendent and Larry Turk, Facility Manager asked if the CCWA
could provide
volunteers to assist in filling sandbags for placement along the beach at Bird Island.
The reason for the sandbags is that the PINS staff is concerned with the erosion of about 300
feet of beach along the RV parking lot and road to the north end.
They received Corps of Engineers approval to use 1,000 sandbags to help control erosion.
The CCWA and other volunteers worked about 40 hours and completed 75
percent of the sandbags needed (VIEW
PHOTOS) before the final project day on April 12.

Beach closing passes
Supporters of open beaches may push for May election
By Brandi Dean Caller-Times
Excerpt from Caller-Times article:
October 19, 2005 - The City Council voted Tuesday to close the beach along the Padre Island seawall to vehicles after hearing more than 30 opinions and saying its members can't be accused
of not listening. But opponents of closing the area to vehicles are seeking a wider audience - city voters.

Corpus featured prominently in Windsurfing Magazine
Corpus Christi windsurfing has been
in the news lately, as witnessed by four recent clips from
Windsurfing Magazine below. In the May and June 2005 issues, Corpus
was listed as one of four of the sure bets for wind in the U.S. In
the Fall 2005 issue, Eric Sanford recalls a windy trip to Corpus,
and the City of Corpus Christi places a half-page advertisement. The
article and ad each included
a photo by Corpus Christi photographer and windsurfer (and CCWA's webmaster!) Carrie Robertson.
Three CCWA members were also mentioned in the Fall 2005 issue of Windsurfing: Bill Jones,
Meg Jones, Trucker Bob Conace and Robert McGonigle for their top GPS speeds set in 2005 (page 33) and
Alissa Inman for being one of windsurfing's Fresh Faces (page 51).
